Michel de Notre-Dame, known throughout the world as Nostradamusleft in his prophecies a series of disturbing visions that, centuries after their publication, continue to generate interpretations and debates. Among his many prophecies, his enigmatic quatrains, compiled in the book published in 1555, ‘Les Prophéties’, seem to allude to specific citiesdescribing conflict scenarios, sieges and alliances. In that sense, among its many predictions, there is one spanish city which stands out in particular for the large number of occasions in which it is mentioned as a key point in different episodes of war and betrayal.
This city, located in the mediterranean coastis presented in the texts of Nostradamus like a strategic place which becomes the target of alliances and attacks by sea. In one of his darkest passages, the French astrologer describes a possible scenario of vulnerability: «France has five parts besieged by negligence, Tunisia, Argal attacked by Persians: León, Seville, Barcelona fallen. “He will not have the fleet for the Venetians.” In this quatrain, Nostradamus seems to warn of a situation in which this city could be exposed to attacks by foreign forces. The city in question is Barcelona and Centuria I, Quartet LXXIII suggests that, due to negligence in the protection of the coasts, Barcelona would be destined to suffer a series of conflicts in which the city becomes a strategic objective.
Barcelona, a city in the sights of the French astrologer
Likewise, the Sixth Century, LVI Quartet also points to Barcelona as the main scene of a confrontation: «The feared armada of the enemy Narbón, will greatly intimidate the Respéricas: Perpignan emptied by the blind Darbón, Then Barcelona by sea will give the pikes».
In another passage, Centuria III, Quatrain LXXXVIII, Nostradamus delves into the idea of Barcelona as the center of a maritime confrontation that terrifies the neighboring cities: “From Barcelona by sea a powerful armada, entire Marseille will tremble with fear: Islands occupied by sea help closed, Your traitor on land will swim.” Here, Nostradamus evokes a powerful armada setting sail from Barcelona, causing fear in the French city, suggesting that the Catalan city could lead an offensive in times of great tension in the Mediterranean.
Nostradamus also describes a panorama of political intrigues and betrayals that surround the city of Barcelona. In Century VI, Quatrain LXIV, the author suggests that the city will be trapped in a deception game where the promises of peace are unfulfilled: “No peace agreement will be reached, all interested parties will act by deception, peace and truce on land and sea protested, by Barcelona skillfully assaulting the fleet.” In this context, Nostradamus describes the city as a victim of a orchestrated attackthe result of betrayal and hidden interests between the parties in dispute.
On the other hand, in the X Century, Quatrain XIV, the futurologist reveals the arrival of a conflictive character to Barcelona that debate between bravery and fearwhich may imply that the city of Barcelona is a place of change and salvation: “Urnel Vaucile without advice from himself, boldly timid, imprisoned by fear, defeated, accompanied by some livid harlots, in Barcelona to the Carthusians convinced” .
However, not all of Nostradamus’s visions are bleak. In some of his texts, he mentions a possible alliance between Barcelona and other Mediterranean cities who come together to confront a common threat. In the VII Century, Quatrain XLII, a coalition between Barcelona, Genoa and Venice: «From Barcelona, from Genoa and Venice, From the Sicily plague Monet united: Against the armed Barbara he will aim, Barbarian pushed far away to Tunisia». In this quatrain, Nostradamus suggests that Barcelona, instead of just being a target of conflict, could play an important role in a defensive unionfacing an external threat and showing his spirit of resistance and solidarity with other Mediterranean cities.
In a final vision, in the 7th Century, Quatrain “Exceeding Barcelona to a sacked island.” Here, the city seems to be the target of a powerful alliancethis time coming from northern Europe, which sees Barcelona as a strategic objective in a larger scale conflict.
