Javier Sancho Sanz (Zaragoza, 1961) teaches Biochemistry at the University of Zaragoza. As a researcher, he tries to understand the structure and functions of the proteins that make up poets and other living beings. Read poetry, history and diverse essays. Know the excitement. He has published a book of stories: Color stories (PUZ, 2003) and two collections of poems: Hallucinations (Olélibros, 2019) and Cautious portrait (Olelibros, 2024). He believes that the value of poetry of the present will only be fully understood in the future. This calms and worries him greatly. An eclectic poet, he aspires for his poems to be defended one by one. On top of the usual themes of poetry, he superimposes his deformed vision of nature. For the moment, these are its principles, to which what Marx said to a lady can be applied.
Javier Sancho is one of the most ironic and cultured poets I have read, as well as being humble and simple and knowing how to recite by heart. Maybe a little shy. But here is this magnificent sonnet, collected in Cautious Portrait. It reminds me of the Baroque poets. Well, he writes clean verses, with clear images, with a clear meaning of the poem and with that ingenuity typical of someone who knows the job, even if it is science. Reading his poems is coming into contact with life through his word. In another of Cauto’s poems, Portrait has a couple of lapidary verses of a sarcastic vital attitude towards existence: “When I’m dying, if there’s no rush, / I’ll remember that I was lying here”. The girls from Teruel are the nicest.
I didn’t suspect it until that day
when I was introduced to Maria

He looked at me the way knives look
and I thought that was how he smiled at me.
“I’m doing the thesis,” he said, if somewhat cold,
soft like the skin of borage.
The world was falling apart and we looked at each other.
I thought: you are now mine, Cleopatra,
and she thought: this guy is not complete,
This will be five decades ago. And here we are.
The one from Teruel pampers me and idolizes me
and I write verses to him in secret.
