When the Government of Pedro Sanchez decreed official three-day mourning for the DANA tragedythe PSOE announced that during that time it would not make political statements. Sumar did the same. “Political confrontation has its moments, but today is the time for unity in pain, and in the hope of finding the missing alive,” the socialists noted.
More than a week later, the role of the PSOE remains similar. The agenda has been practically eliminated since then and no statements or messages have been sent from Ferraz beyond a victim support document approved last Monday in the federal Executive.
The PSOE has not entered into the rag of the PP accusations who leads Alberto Núñez Feijóo. Nor did he do so after the press conference offered by Sánchez in Moncloa to present the first aid approved by the Government. The popular party sent some sources to the media denouncing Sánchez’s “blackmail” by exposing the need to approve the General State Budgets (PGE). “Unity,” they simply responded.
Ferraz sources consulted by Public They point out that they are focused on the victims and supporting the Government’s information. An Executive that has also avoided confronting the popular ones and also avoiding the debate on powers in which the opposition and the president of the Valencian Generalitat himself began to fully enter, Carlos Mazónpractically from day one. This also includes Sumar’s ministers, who maintain a similar profile.
But the days go by. The information happens and the siege of Mazón due to his management he becomes narrower, even within his own party. For this reason, since the middle of this week, certain public criticisms of the regional leader and other officials of his Government have already begun to creep in.
The one who is exercising this role of certain balance is the Minister of Science and Universities, Diana Morantbut as general secretary of the PSPV. The leader has multiplied her presence in the media in recent days. Between Wednesday and Friday there have been up to seven interventions on radio and television.
In these interviews, two issues have been made visible that well exemplify that balance that, for the moment, the socialists are formally seeking. On the one hand, the declaration that the PSPV will support the PP to approve the regional budgets. “You have to have high vision,” highlighted the minister. “The Government has the obligation to make good budgets and the opposition has the obligation to support them,” he added.
The socialist sources consulted by this medium deny that there is an intention behind force Feijóo to repeat the same with Sánchez’s PGE. “It’s what needs to be done right now to help, there’s nothing more,” they point out. “No PP budget measure is going to be able to justify us voting against it with the situation we have,” they point out at the PSPV leadership.
But at the same time they do not deny that the comparison could put the PP between a rock and a hard place. “We are not going to demand that Feijóo do the same, this decision is independent. But morally he would have to do it,” the sources consulted point out.
On the other hand, the aforementioned criticisms have already been seen in Morant’s statements, although not directly. “I know where the Government delegate was […] “In certain decisions or non-decisions that some have not made, I surely would not have been able to get up from the ground,” he said for example on RNE this Friday.. “Political responsibilities will be purged” because “the facts are incontestable”, he has also repeated these days without going into the substance of the matter.
The sources of Valencian socialism consulted recognize that there are some concern among some leaders and militants for having gone so many days without communicating at a political level. Something that leaves more space for the media and political right to impose their story. “We are coming out to confront their lies,” they point out in the PSPV.
And that is precisely what the third vice president tried to do, Teresa Riberaon Friday night. The PP organized a campaign that day accusing her of being absent in the crisis. Ribera decided to give an interview to Cadena SER in which, among other matters, he stated that he had called Mazón up to four times on October 29. It has been, to date, practically the only occasion in which a member of the Government has come to directly refute the popular ones.
Meanwhile, this Saturday there has been demonstration in Valencia to ask for Mazón’s resignation. It is mainly from social movements and, according to PSPV sources, its militants were free to attend or not. But as a party they have not officially called.
In parallel, the strategy of Commitments It’s different. The Valencian team has gone directly to ask for Mazón’s resignation now. They have also demanded that Sánchez and Feijóo remove him from command of the situation for being “incompetent”, according to the words used this week by the spokesperson in Congress Agueda Micó.
