The Civil Guard is looking for a man suspected of killing a 76-year-old friar and attacking three others in the Monastery of Santo Espíritu del Monte, in the Valencian town of Gilet. The deceased had a head injury and died shortly after the attack at the Valencia Clinical Hospital after being treated by SAMU doctors.
The events occurred this Saturday, around ten in the morning. The rest of the victims, aged 57, 66 and 95, have been transferred to the Sagunto hospital, due to trauma or bruises, in Basic Life Support units, as confirmed by the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU).
In a statement, the provincial of the Franciscans of the Immaculate Conception, Fray Joaquín Zurera Ribó, explained that “a disturbed person” has entered the convent and “has been attacking the brothers who were in their room, with the intention – as they heard him – of killing the friars.
“With the exception of Brother Antonio Ivars Solbes, who was in the garden, and Brother Federico Allara Aragó, who was in the chaplaincy celebrating mass, the rest of the brothers have been violently attacked,” he says.
«We unequivocally condemn this aggression and we join in the suffering of our brothers, with the injuries in the body and the pain in the soul for what they experienced, which, without a doubt, leaves a deep mark on people. We also ask for the aggressor to be aware of the damage and be able to rectify behavior that is not at all typical of the human condition,” the provincial’s letter indicates.
“This event is also asking all of us brothers to be more attentive to prevent people from entering our fraternities who could cause damage of any kind, and thus know how to take care of each other,” he says.
