The 19th edition of the Casar de Periedo Bean and Vegetable Fair (Cabezón de la Sal) will bring together more than 100 agri-food producers and artisan producers from Cantabria and other autonomous communities the weekend of November 16 and 17.
This year, Antonio Resines will be in charge of collecting the Golden Bean, as ‘Alubiero Mayor’ of the 2024 Bean and Vegetable Fair, in recognition of his professionalism and human quality. The event will take place on November 17, at 12:30 p.m., in a public ceremony on the main stage of the square.
This was announced by the Minister of Rural Development, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, María Jesús Susinos, accompanied by the mayor of Cabezón de la Sal, Óscar López, during the presentation of the fair and the commemorative poster for this edition.
As the counselor highlighted, The Casar de Periedo fair brings together “everything” that an event of this type can offer for the enjoyment of people of all ages.
In addition, the counselor highlighted that, apart from the stands installed at the fairgrounds, live workshops such as ceramics or wool spinning can be viewed, which contributes to making the program “very diverse and attractive.”
For his part, the mayor has specified that the main objective is to make known “our most beloved product, the bean.” To this end, more than 100 stalls complete the route where you can purchase both food and craft products, mainly of Cantabrian origin. Furthermore, another purpose is to “value the effort and work of our elders and their traditions, a tribute to their sacrificed life and their legacy,” both have mentioned.
PROGRAM
Organized by the Casar de Periedo Neighborhood Council, in collaboration with the Ministry, through the Cantabria Food Quality Office (ODECA), and the Cabezón de la Sal City Council, The fair can be visited on Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
It will display Cantabrian products such as beans, vegetables, cheeses, honey, corn flour, pomace, wine, paprika, anchovies, oil, sausages and sweets from a hundred producers.
In addition, 80 artisans of wood, stone, leather, ceramics, wool, glass, basketry, yokes, albarcas, cuévanos, dried flowers, models, tails, sailor knots, ropes and nets, among other products, will gather.
All of them will be installed in the fairgrounds that run through the streets of the town and will be enlivened by parades, led by the piteros ‘Hermanos Barquín’, the bagpipe group Garabanduya, Los Peralos, Ronda Salines and Grupo de Piteros de Santander.
In addition to the stalls, on Saturday, at 12:00 p.m., there will be a demonstration and making of railway pots; at 1:00 p.m., tasting and pairing of stews; at 5:00 p.m. the tribute to Elena Villegas, the protagonist of the poster, who died this year.
To close the day, there will be a performance by the Virgen del Campo Dance Group from Cabezón de la Sal on its centenary.
SUNDAY
On Sunday, starting at 11:30 a.m., the traditional chon descent will be held, in the old-fashioned way at the slaughter stand with the sale of products; At 12:30 p.m. the appointment of ‘Alubiero Mayor 2024’ to Antonio Resines will take place. And at 1:30 p.m. the milking demonstration by Granja Cudaña.
At 2:00 p.m., 2,000 portions of mountain stew will be distributedprepared by the residents of the town with the collaboration of La Ermita Cantabria; at 3:30 p.m. there will be a tasting of port tea with pomace; At 4:00 p.m., four baskets will be raffled with products donated by artisans from the fair, and at 5:00 p.m., as the Fair closes, a performance by the Tambourines of Ruente will take place in the Palace gardens.
The bar will remain open throughout the day and tortos, boronos and torreznos will be distributed with the drink.
The Casar de Periedo Bean and Vegetable Fair is a festival of Regional Tourist Interest that has taken place since 2005 in Casar de Periedo that, during the third weekend of November, travels back in time to the 40s of the 20th century. to reproduce typical practices of the time.
Among them, rural scenes are recreated such as the school, the grandmothers’ gate, the descent of the chon, the tavern and the preparation of traditional products such as pucheru coffee and borono with torto.
This year, as a novelty, an Instagram account and a YouTube channel have been created to increase digital activity and reach the largest number of residents and tourists.
