The icon looks very similar to that of Apple Music, with the difference that the app It is called Nintendo Music and the color is the characteristic red of the Japanese video game company. It is about of a new streaming music platform, but dedicated exclusively to the soundtracks of Super Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and company.
It is certainly not the first application of streaming of “vertical” music, that is, dedicated to a specific genre: Apple has one for classical music, there are examples like Beatport (electronic music), Nugs (dedicated to ‘bootlegs ‘official’ concerts by artists like Springsteen or Metallica). Phish, a very popular group in the United States, even has its own single-thematic app/platform. streaming. But until now, no one had thought of one app dedicated to video game music: Nintendo came first, and we tried it.
How Nintendo Music works
The app It can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play for free, but to use it you must log in with a Nintendo account subscribed to the Online service (with a free one-week trial). In essence, it is a service that is added for free to those already offered by Nintendo for the Switch (multiplayer on-lineold games, digital rewards, etc.).
The application itself is a cross between Spotify (the black background, some graphic elements) and Apple Music, recalling the clean organization of the content. What draws attention is, precisely, the organization: what in streaming music is called “healing”; Music tracks are searchable by platform and by game (corresponding to albums, with dozens of tracks), but they are also organized in a series of very well done thematic playlists ranging from moods (‘Walking’, ‘Good Night’) to positioning in game scenes (‘Title Themes’, ‘Boss Battles’) or characters. The playback is accompanied by screenshots of the games; You can even hide the soundtracks of titles you haven’t played yet to avoid spoilers. HE They can create playlists, which are saved in the library itself as on any music platform. But (in a nice and original idea) individual tracks can be looped for up to 60 minutes. In summary, an application of streaming of well-made music. However, as we will see, it has great limitations.
An incomplete catalog
Unfortunately, the repertoire is not very extensive. Nintendo Music does not include, of course, the entire endless catalog of the Japanese company. Currently there are some hundreds of themes and thirty games, most recent: Several Switch titles, but also a couple of Wii titles (curious the inclusion of channel music and launch screens) and some history (DS, Game Cube, Game Boy, NES and Nintendo 64). Already in the first days some additions were made, a Nintendo video mentions absent titles talking about ‘A catalog that will grow over time’, but it is not known how or when.
In addition to the catalog to be increased, the credits of the music authors are missing: It wouldn’t hurt to see a playlist dedicated to Koji Kondoto quote the most famous, the author of the music of Super Mario. Finally, interestingly, the app not available on switchbut only in smartphones (and not even in tablets).
