The head of the Central Court of Instruction number 1 of the National Court has sent Óscar Sánchez, chief inspector in charge of the Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit of the Judicial Police Brigade of the Madrid Police Headquarters, to provisional prison, who had more than 20 million euros from drugs trapped in his house. Eight of them were in a single room and another in his office. This chief inspector was the one who directed the Titella operation, in which the main investigator was José Luis Moreno. There are fourteen others involved who have also been imprisoned.
The operation is related to the largest haul of cocaine ever seized in Spain, which was seized in the port of Algeciras in mid-October. In addition to the chief inspector, his wife, also a police officer and stationed at the Alcalá de Henares Police Station, was also arrested.
“This is the most important anti-drug operation that has ever been carried out in our country,” say the sources consulted by ABC, who add that it is a Spanish organization, of enormous power. “When the details are known – summary secrecy has been decreed – many will put their hands on their heads,” say the sources consulted.
The arrests, as already noted, are related to the intervention of the cache of more than 13 tons of cocaine in Algeciras, the largest in the history of Spain and the second in all of Europe. The agents carried out five entries and searches at homes and offices in Madrid and Alicante, including the home of the chief inspector of the UDEF of the Madrid Police. As this newspaper has learned, at least a hundred vehicles have been seized, including Lamborghinis.
The container had left the port of Guayaquil (Ecuador) from where it traveled to Algeciras. The Ecuadorian exporter appeared in customs and police databases with a history of illicit trafficking. Upon arrival at the port of Algeciras, the container was inspected and discrepancies were detected between the declared cargo and the actual cargo, which led to the opening, which took place on October 14.
The contaminated container had a screen made up of boxes actually loaded with bananas to hide the drugs. Behind this screen was a large number of boxes, identical to the previous ones, but inside which were hidden bricks of cocaine packaged to the exact size of those boxes.
The operation has caused a shock in the Police, since the detained commander was not only well regarded by his superiors but also had the affection of his subordinates. It is true that he was a reserved person, who spoke little, but no one could imagine something like that.
The sources consulted by ABC specify that the money seized from the chief inspector was not from the organization, but rather was the benefits obtained by the police couple for their role within it. Therefore, the volume of money handled by drug traffickers is unimaginable.
