The box that in 2023 contained 44 chocolates, now contains 42. But, in addition, instead of costing about 11 euros, it now costs 12. This specific example is that of the well-known Red Box of chocolates from Nestlé with the sales prices in Hipercor for the respective months of October, but it is available in other well-known formats of both chocolates and nougat, such as Lindt or Suchard.
This is confirmed by the organization Facua-Consumers in Actionwho has detected examples of redflation in nine nougats and chocolates on the eve of Christmas. Specifically, it has identified this practice in both its own brands and some private labels.
The most striking case is that of the Nestle Red Boxwhich through its different formats (42 chocolates (previously 44), 21 chocolates (previously 21) and 11 chocolates) has reduced the number of sweets and increased prices.
From the same company, Facua also highlights the case of chocolates Dark Sublimewhich although they have increased the weight of their 145 grams (previously 143) and 87 grams (previously 85) formats, have increased their sales price disproportionately, between 17% and 20% according to the examples collected in different surfaces—in this case, in Alcampo and DIA—.
In DAYthe crispy black nougat from its white brand weighs 50 grams less from one year to the next. But, in addition, it has become 14 cents more expensive, which represents an increase of 7.5% (or 43.45% per kilo). Something similar happens with its assortment of pralines, which weighs 130 grams less but costs 35 cents more.
The Sweet Wishes box Lindt Last year it cost 12.99 euros in its 345 gram format. This year it is not sold in that format, but in another 337 gram format at a price of 13.99 euros.
Finally, the nougat Suchard It is, for Facua, “one of the clearest examples of redflation detected.” Both last year and this year, the classic chocolate bar is sold in most establishments for 3.99 euros. However, while in 2023 it contained 260 grams, in 2024 it has been ‘thinned’ by 30 grams, to weigh 230 grams on the scale. “Therefore, the price per kilo of Suchard nougat has increased by 13%, despite the fact that at first glance most consumers do not detect this weight loss of 30 grams,” the organization considers.
For all these reasons, Facua requests the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 to promote a modification of the law to force companies that incur redflation to have to announce it for a long period of time on the labeling of the affected product. “In this way, consumers could clearly know how the packaging, format or price of these products has been modified,” concludes the organization.
