Saint Ernest, a martyr of German origin, is known for having been abbot at Zwiefalten between 1141 and 1146. After resigning his position, he joined the Second Crusade, called by Bernard of Clairvaux and led by him, Otto of Freising and Conrad III, with the purpose of spreading the word of God in Persia and Arabia. However, his path to Jerusalem was interrupted when he was captured by Muslims and taken to Mecca. There, refusing to renounce his Christian faith and convert to Islam, he was subjected to torture and finally murdered, thus becoming a martyr.
