“The first president with serious crimes”: this is how the international press is recounting Trump’s victory

It is already a fact: Donald Trump has won the elections in the United States, and will become the next president of the country four years after having left – very reluctantly, to put it mildly – the White House.

On an election night that has not been as close as the polls predicted, the Republican Party has been turning the key states red as the counting progressed, while Kamala Harris’ options were diluted.

Since this Tuesday, and throughout the campaign, the international media have been extensively reporting on the electoral event. Shortly before noon (Spanish peninsular time) this Wednesday, the US agency AP declared Donald Trump the winner.

“The first president with serious crimes”

“Trump triumphs,” The Washington Post headlined on its website, with a special ‘breaking news’ call: “Trump is projected as the winner of the elections, becoming the second president to win two non-consecutive terms and the first president with serious crimes.”

“Trump attacks again,” notes The New York Times on its website, which describes the magnate’s return to the White House as “surprising” “after a dark and challenging campaign.” “His victory opens a new era of uncertainty for the nation,” adds the New York newspaper in another of its pieces, which also talks about Trump’s condemnations and his authoritarianism.

“Historical comeback”

The BBC speaks, for its part, of a “historic comeback”, after the polls showed very close results with Kamala Harris until the day of the vote, when the balance immediately tipped in favor of the Republican.

In France, Le Monde reported that Trump was “certain of victory” shortly before projections gave him more than the 270 electoral votes needed to win. In one of its numerous analysis articles related to the news, Le Monde warns that Donald Trump’s victory “plunges Ukraine into the unknown.”

“A second term that makes us fear the worst”

Libération titles its main analysis of the results in the US: “Donald Trump, driven to the doors of the White House by a nostalgic America.” And he adds a somewhat gloomy signed editorial: “Donald Trump in the White House, a second term that makes us fear the worst.”

In Germany, the Frankfurter Allgemeine talks about Trump’s “revenge” and considers that his victory “is no surprise.”

“Democrats have risked little”

Also in Germany, Der Spiegel takes Trump to the opening of its cover, which highlights the joy of Republicans in the face of Kamala Harris’ silence. “The Democrats have warned too much and have risked too little,” says one of their analysis. Another of his main pieces is titled “The Trump Shock”, and talks about what he learned during the magnate’s first term.

The Italian Corriere della Sera highlights on its cover a quotation mark from Trump during his winning speech tonight, in which he promised to “end wars.” They also echo Donald Trump’s praise for Elon Musk and the silence about Harris, while highlighting the rise in the stock market of Tesla and Truth, companies owned by Musk and Trump respectively.

For his part, the Belgian Le Soir talks about the “incredible return” of Donald Trump and asks several questions: what Trump’s first hundred days in the White House will be like and whether the “populist era” that his victory in the US opens will extend. to the rest of the world.
