The pride of having two Spanish coaches, Talant Dujshebaev and Xavier Sabatéin two of the best teams in powerful Polish handball, turned into embarrassment on October 13. The reason was the violent brawl that both took part in at the end of the classic between Kielce and Wisla Plock and which later continued in the media.
The match, played dog-eat by both teams, ended beyond the scoreboard with twenty-one exclusions, eleven for Wisla Plock and ten for Kielce, a red card for Wisla’s player Mirsad Terzic and a blue card for Kielce’s Jorge Maqueda , in the latter case for having bitten the Bosnian full-back.
But even more striking than the image of the bite was the confrontation between the heads of both benches after the final horn sounded. Dujshebaev and Sabaté were involved in a heated discussion after which the Wisla coach Plock (winner of the match 29-26) reported having received a spit by his colleague. An accusation to which the Kielce coach responded by ensuring that he had received racist insults.
The tension, far from cooling down as the hours passed, remained intact while the technicians went through various Spanish radio stations to explain the altercation. No one gave in.
“Educational and preventive” sanctions
For all this, the commissioner of the Polish Handball League decided to sanction six games of suspension for the two technicians. “The sanctions are preventive and educational in nature, aimed at preventing similar situations in the future and promoting the principles of fair play,” he said in an official statement.
Also receiving special punishment for the brawl were Kielce winger Arkadiusz Moryto, with a four-match suspension, and Wisla Plock’s Croatian center Leon Susnja.
For the clubs the Commissioner imposed a heavy fine of 30,000 zlotys (almost 7,000 euros).
