The American technology company Google has chosen Zaragoza as the first Spanish city in which to develop an innovative project by which, after analyzing the solar potential of the roofs and covers of all its buildings, it will offer recommendations on where it is best to locate solar panels with which improve energy efficiency.
To do this, based on the aerial images available to the Silicon Valley company, it builds high-resolution 3D models of the individual roofs and calculates how much sunlight each of those buildings could receive during the day. Once all the information is collected, it offers recommendations for the optimal placement of solar panels for a given roof, possible energy savings, and more.

Google will use aerial images to build 3D models of roofs and analyze how much light they receive
Specifically, the program is based on a technology that estimates the potential of individual roofs with high-resolution 3D Google models based on available aerial images and calculates the sunlight that each building could receive during the day to offer recommendations for optimal placement of solar panels and possible energy savings.
“This data will allow us to make a better segmentation of our decisions, in addition to improving the selection and management of the aid and resources that are granted, for example, through Zaragoza Housing,” said the mayor, Natalia Chueca, who this Tuesday has signed an understanding agreement, for two years and without financial compensation, with the vice president of the company, Cris Turner.
The project, called Rooftop Solar Potential, has already been successfully tested before in other large cities such as Mexico City, London, Yokohama and, especially, in Houston.
According to sources from the council, in this last city these data on solar energy have been used to design a plan that includes the generation of 5 million MWH and that has resulted in “an improvement in access to energy sources, a reduction of the costs for residents and the creation of jobs.”

With today’s signing, Zaragoza becomes the first Spanish city to close an agreement of this type with Google, by which it becomes part of its network of global connections, which includes locations in countries such as Japan, South Korea or USA.
The agreement will be launched “quickly” and will serve the Aragonese capital to further its goal of being a climate neutral and smart city in 2030.

Furthermore, training is positioned as another of the basic pillars of the project, especially taking into account the emerging position of Aragon when it comes to attracting billion-dollar investments in data centers.
In fact, the mayor has left the door open for Google to land in the future technology park that they plan to build in the city as part of the expansion of data centers.
“We are especially grateful, because Google is going to make pioneering technologies available to the city that are not even for sale,” Chueca said.
