The Council of Ministers, at the initiative of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has approved the Royal Decree of direct concession of 363.7 million euros to Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and the Canary Islands to finance metropolitan collective public transport in the financial year 2024, as reported by the organization itself through a press release.
Thus, the almost 364 million are distributed among the four regions through the following breakdown:
- The Madrid Regional Transport Consortium: 126.89 million euros.
- Barcelona Metropolitan Transport Authority: 149.3 million euros.
- Valencia Metropolitan Transport Authority: 40 million euros.
- Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands: 47.5 million euros.
Through this concession, aid or free (in the case of the Canary Islands) public transport is guaranteed, so in principle the current prices would be maintained in the different regions, as reported by Ayuso in the specific case of Madrid.
The Ministry of Transport manages these subsidies in its capacity as the Ministry managing mobility, understood as a right of citizens and an element of social cohesion and economic developmentto which are also added the subsidies for competitive competition in favor of Local Entities to finance urban collective transport services, which until 2020 were being managed by the Ministry of Finance.
“The granting of these subsidies is conditional on having a Sustainable Mobility Plan by the beneficiaries and that it is consistent with the Spanish Sustainable Mobility Strategy 2030so that state financing acts as an incentive to deploy this mobility planning and management instrument” reports the Ministry.
