Little more than the void left by those who are no longer here, the enormous material losses, the uncertainty about the future and the frustration and anger now occupy the minds of the Valencians of the territories south of the Turia. His thoughts are far from anything other than alleviating, as far as possible, the consequences of the DANA that hit the area last week. However, out of desperation, there have emerged some solidarity initiatives to help people affected by the storm.
To support a region known for major events related to athletics, and where the Valencia Marathon now sees its edition this year in jeopardy, one of these initiatives is precisely a virtual solidarity race. The Horta Sud Foundationan association with more than half a century of history of helping in the region, has organized an initiative with the sports ‘influencer’ Sergio Turullknown on social networks as @pitufollow.
«There are many of us who feel sadness and helplessness with everything that is happening. For this reason, taking advantage of the visibility I have on networks, I have decided to launch a virtual solidarity race together with Fundació Horta Sud, which from minute one is helping in the areas most affected by DANA and that need more resources. We have already demonstrated on numerous occasions the power that the ‘runner’ community has when we come together. Let’s do it again,” Turull wrote in his Instagram stories.
This race allows you to participate from anywhere in the world, like others held during the covid-19 pandemic, and the procedure is simple. Simply register “symbolically” in the link provided by the association and do a donation of 10 euros. The idea is to go run 5 or 10 kilometers on Friday, November 8 at any time and share it on social networks with the hashtag #kmssolidarios.
Furthermore, they have designed a customizable virtual bib “with a name, a message of support, a drawing… and also use it to spread the initiative,” as Turull explained. In addition, they have created an event on the Strava platform to increase dissemination.
The Fundació Horta Sud is also behind another initiative, this time together with the clothing brand ‘castiza’. The latter has designed a t-shirt with the slogan “La força de tot un poble en moviment” “The strength of an entire town in movement” available in three colors (gray, orange and white) and on sale for 25 euros.
«All profits will be donated to those affected by DANA for food, water, utensils. One part will go to the Fundació Horta Sud, while we will take care of the other personally to buy what the families need and we will deliver it by hand», ‘castiza’ has published on his social networks.
Also the Sevillian company of printed t-shirts Pampling Last week, he created a charity t-shirt to raise money for the victims of DANA, which the AEMET describes as “the most adverse cold drop of the century.” In this case, the garment costs 10 euros, and the amount raised will be donated in full to the Red Cross.
Some artists have also wanted to contribute to helping the Valencian people. This is the case of Valeria Palmeiro, popularly known as Coco Davez (@cocodavez), who has created a poster for sale for 45 euros and whose profits will go entirely to World Central Kitchen, in charge of feeding the volunteers.
Also Pilar García-Ferreron @pilsferrer networks, has transformed his talent to support the Valencians. The artist, characterized by her collages, has announced that the profits obtained from the sale of four prints dedicated to the Valencian Community will be donated to Casa Caridad Valencia, an organization in charge of responding to the needs of the most disadvantaged.
The benefits obtained through these initiatives are added to the donations, both financial and material, that citizens have carried out through a multitude of organizations, mobilized to help the Valencian people. Likewise, they join the platforms developed to locate what is missing in each part of the territory or where the cars washed away by the flood have ended up.
