“Our priority is to work for those affected.” It is one of the messages that were transmitted this Monday from Moncloa about the situation in the Valencian Country after the DANA catastrophe. The Government of Pedro Sanchez has decided, for the moment, not to enter into a direct clash with the PP. Not even with Alberto Núñez Feijóo nor with Carlos Mazón.
Both leaders have chosen at different times since last Wednesday to hold the Executive responsible in one way or another for managing the crisis. It is true that the leader of the PP reduced the shock this Mondayalthough he insisted on demanding that the Government take control, which in practice means taking it away from the Valencian Generalitat.
Neither Sánchez nor other ministers who have appeared in the media have wanted to get involved in competence reproaches. Nor have they done so from the PSOE, which usually has more free rein for this type of dialectical confrontation than the members of the Government.
In fact, at Ferraz they have avoided making political statements for several days and they announced it. The declaration approved by the socialist leadership this Monday, in a Federal Executive held without the presence of Sánchez, well exemplifies the intentions of the socialists, aligned with Moncloa.
“This is not the time for disagreements. There will be time to clarify responsibilities. Facing this enormous tragedy is the highest priority,” the text states. “Cooperation” between administrations is the discursive axis of the socialists. “It is the time for unity,” they insist.
The only license that the socialists took this Monday, 24 hours after the attack on Sánchez in Paiporta and the throwing of mud against Felipe VI, was pointing out the ultra movements. And at the same time, ask Feijóo on social networks to condemn the events.
This Monday, Moncloa left all the focus to two people with a technical profile. After the Crisis Committee held, the head of the Military Emergency Unit (UME)Javier Marcos, and the Secretary General of Transport, Marta Serrano. The military’s presentation was especially significant.
“It has been pedagogical and necessary“, Government sources point out about her. Marcos, without directly confronting Mazón, made it clear on several occasions that his intervention It could only be done when the Valencian Generalitat gave them the green light.
Aid plan
This Tuesday the first Council of Ministers since the catastrophe is held. As confirmed by government sources, a first “ambitious” package of financial aid distributed in various ministries. The initiatives were being worked on and finalized during Monday afternoon.
The declaration of an area seriously affected by a civil protection emergency will be approved for all territories, both in the Valencian Country and in Catalonia, Andalusia or Castilla-La Mancha. It is something that on paper would speed up the procedures for aid. It was confirmed at the end of the day by the Minister of the Presidency, Felix Bolañosafter meeting with the parliamentary groups in Congress. Specifically, a Royal Decree of “urgent measures” will be approved, as specified by Bolaños himself. In parallel, Mazón presented his own requests shortly after the minister’s intervention.
The objective is for aid to reach the territory as soon as possible and to be activated for the reconstruction of the territory. “It is our main priority,” they say in Moncloa. They are also shuffled tax measureslike the advance this Monday by the Ministry of Finance to suspend the collection of the second payment of personal income tax, and direct subsidies to certain sectors, among other initiatives.
Meanwhile, at the labor level, the second vice president and Minister of Employment, Yolanda Diazannounced a “shield” to protect the productive fabric of all workers, including the self-employed. Some of these measures are already in force, such as the ERTEs that were already implemented during the pandemic.
