Roberto Dominguez stop being him representative of Roca Rey. A news that had been brewing in the bullfighting rings for a year, after several disagreements between the two over the management and involvement of the Valladolid native in the career of the Peruvian figure, and which was confirmed this Thursday afternoon, when the Valladolid bullfighter has informed Mundotoro that in addition to separating himself from Lima, he is definitively withdrawing from any professional connection with the world of bullfighting.
This is what he expressed in a letter sent to Mundotoro, in which he thanks all the bullfighting businessmen with whom he has dealt “and who have always respected me, understanding that my demands and many times intransigence “They were motivated solely and exclusively to defend those who had trusted me.”
Letter from Roberto Domínguez
Bullfighters have a very particular way of evaluating the world around us when we are active. We do not know how to manage well time we spend on sycophantsadvisors and opportunists who approach attracted by the aroma of success. Sometimes we realize too late how little time we dedicate to listening to those who will really leave their mark on us.
I have to admit that I have been privileged in this sense because, after I retired, bullfighting has given me the opportunity to have that time to better value what is really worth it. That’s why I think the time has come to be grateful for how much this bullfighting world has given me, despite having had a reputation for avoiding it and living it in an atypical way.
The years of childhood dreaming of being a bullfighter are far away, the two decades as a professional savoring successes and learning from failures, the five years behind the microphones of Vía Digital appreciating what my companions did in the ring, even when I was eleven years old alongside Julián López ‘El Juli’ in times of maturation, doubts and triumphs. Much more recent is the learning with Andrés Roca Rey, atypical bullfighterto whom I am grateful that at a crucial moment in his career he wanted my opinion at his side.
And I, who have always been critical of farewells and the temptation to take advantage of the momentum of the last train, now feel the need to close the bullfighting chapter of my life in this way.
I think the time has come to agree with all those criticisms and praises that speak of my good luck. A luck that has a name and surname, that of those who accompanied me in each stage. My uncle Fernando Domínguez, professor of life and bullfighting; Fernando Fernández Román, at his side I learned another way of telling the bullfighting spectacle that we professionals do not get to see when we are in the ring; Julián López “El Juli”, because being so young and with the baton of command of the bullfighter, he put his blind trust in me, valuing each of my successes and accepting my mistakes; Andrés Roca Rey who has taught me a new way of walking through life and ruling in bullfighting, with the daily Russian roulette of his naked and torn delivery, without caring about the circumstances or the condition of the bull, imposing his law. The law that now prevails in the new generations of fans who once again believe in the absolute contempt for risk, in the idol, in the hero.
I also want to thank all the bullfighting businessmen with whom I have dealt and who have always respected me, understanding that my demands and often intransigence were motivated solely and exclusively to defend those who had trusted me. To all the ranchers, who have understood that above friendship and my personal tastes, the bull that could best contribute to the success of the bullfighter it represented at all times has always prevailed. To all the crews and all my colleagues whose admiration has grown over time. And above all to the fans, who in all these facets and for so many years, have been the daily approach to the best memory.
On July 25, 2023, Andrés had a dramatic mishap in Santander from which he miraculously emerged unharmed, being, along with Julián’s goring at the fair in April 2013, the worst bullfighting moments of my life. When I approached the barrier to ask him how he was feeling, with a lost look he told me: “I can’t explain why nothing has happened to me.” Today I recover the words I said to him then. “You will always be lucky because you deserve it.” An unpublished document that includes the film ‘Afternoons of Solitude’ by Albert Serra. Documentary that, thanks to Andrés, has reawakened the interest of intellectuals in bullfighting, moving from the topical debate to a much deeper reflection.
For details like this, I hope that fans and critics understand the importance and responsibility that Andrés has and know how to recognize him as an absolute bastion of world bullfighting and a fundamental link with new generations of fans.
Roberto Dominguez.
