Ester Expósito: “Believe it or not, women, like men, gain weight and lose weight”

“I’m tired and I’m angry.” The actress Esther Expósito received the Bazaar Women of the Year 2024 award this Monday and, when she went up to collect it, the first thing she did was express her “support for all women victims of abuse.” The next thing was to announce that she was going to take advantage of her speech to “vent” after having been reflecting on “the very different forms of violence” that women suffer.

“I realized how normalized it is for a person to hide behind a screen and a social network to criticize a woman’s body and point her out for it,” she said. “Today I want to be the one to point out those people and tell them that what they do is not right. There is no opinion, much less publicly, about another person’s physique. And even less so if you have no idea what you are talking about.”

“I have been reading the stupid thing that I have had about fifty surgeries and cosmetic touch-ups on my face since I was 19 years old. And I wonder how much longer I will have to continue reading it,” he said, recalling his beginnings, when he rose to fame as the protagonist of the series. Elite in 2018.

The interpreter has just brand new The cryingthe film by Pedro Martín-Calero that won the Silver Shell for Best Director at the last San Sebastián Festival. As part of the promotion of the horror film, Expósito went to the set of The Revolt from TVE, to be interviewed by David Broncano. “Apparently I have stretched my face with Botox or I don’t know what else,” he lamented. “If that were the case, I would be within my rights, and no stranger has to come and ask me for anything because I haven’t asked them and because it is my face and that’s why I do what I want with it.” “But it turns out not,” he concluded, “I’ve gained a little weight and that’s it. Because believe it or not, women, like men, also grow, change, gain weight or lose weight. And thank goodness, because this means that we are alive and that we are not dolls.”

“I ask that we stop studying with a magnifying glass, analyzing and questioning so exhaustively, especially women,” he concluded.
