The Shura Council of Hezbollahthe highest governing body of the Lebanese Shiite group, announced this Tuesday the appointment of the person who was the number two of the organization, Naim Qassem, as its new general secretary. This appointment comes to replace Hasan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli bombing on September 27.
In a statement issued by Hezbollah leadership, the group assured that “in accordance with the approved mechanism for the election of the secretary general, Hezbollah’s Shura Council agreed to elect His Eminence Sheikh Naim Qassem”. “We ask Almighty God to guide him in this noble mission at the head of Hezbollah and its Islamic resistance,” they say.
In the note, the armed formation promised that with the appointment of Qassem “will work together to achieve Hezbollah’s principles and the goals of your path. Keep the flame of resistance shining and its banner held high until victory is achieved.”
After little more than a month since the assassination of Nasrallahthe group has decided to choose the person who was number two in the formation and who was in charge of giving the three television speeches offered after the death of the previous head of Hezbollah. This decision has been made after last week the Shiite group will confirm the death of Hashem Safi al Dinhead of the formation’s Executive Council and considered one of the main candidates to succeed Nasrallah.
Qassem, whose location is unknown, He was appointed deputy head of Hezbollah in 1991when Nasrallah was not yet the leader of the formation. He has been considered one of the main spokespersons for the Shiite group and the highest-level figure who has even given interviews to media foreigners.
