The strike is a consequence of the failure of a negotiation that has lasted for months; CC.OO. calls for the unification of salary tables, payroll increases and reducing the salary gap
Workers in the textile sector in Spain will go on strike on November 21, a week before Black Friday, a key date for the industry and distribution because it is the one that opens the Christmas shopping season.
This is the consequence of the failure of a negotiation that has lasted for months between the main union in the sector, CO.OO, and the employer representatives. «It is not acceptable that an activity that is considered strategic has the working conditions that it does.“, denounced two days ago the general secretary of the CC.OO. industry area, Garbiñe Espejo, shortly before warning that “the time has come to make decisions” and saying “it’s over.”
The conflict within the textile industry is not a minor one or one that concerns a specific area of labor relations, since it covers problems as general as “the endless days, the 150 professional categories that are below the minimum wage interprofessional, the wage gap and threats from employers that costs must be reduced to be competitive”, the points that the union spokesperson highlighted yesterday at a press conference.
Exactly, CC.OO. calls for an increase in salaries, the unification of the ten salary tables in one and shorten the gender pay gap, which the union places at 22% in favor of men. Regarding this, it must be remembered that of the 80,000 workers in the textile and clothing sector who are called to strike, 60% are women.
