An ambush by Palmeiras radicals against a group of Cruzeiro fans left one dead and at least thirteen injured, in a new episode of violence between fans of two Brazilian soccer teams, official sources reported this Sunday.
The events occurred early Sunday morning near a highway tunnel, near the municipality of Mairiporã, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, according to the regional Security Secretariat in a statement.
According to the preliminary investigation, Cruzeiro fans “suffered an ambush by Palmeiras ultra fans,” according to the information sent to the media.
Sources from the Federal Highway Police reported that the attackers, alleged members of the Mancha Verde brava gang in Palmeira, “fled the scene before the arrival of the agents” and, so far, no one has been arrested.
The only fatality in the event is a 30-year-old Cruzeiro fan.
One of the vehicles in which the fans were traveling was set on fire and another ended up with its windows broken, according to local media.
The Palmeiras radicals had just witnessed the 2-2 draw against Fortaleza, at the Allianz Parque in São Paulo, while the Cruzeiro radicals returned from Curitiba, where their team was beaten, 3-0, against Athletico Paranaense, in the 31st day of the Brazilian Championship.
The Civil Police, which has opened an investigation to clarify the reasons and circumstances of the fight, cut off a lane of the highway where the ambush occurred to carry out an investigation in search of evidence.
So far there are no arrests
In the course of the work, they found “homemade explosive devices” and “caltrops” to puncture the wheels of vehicles, also known as “miguelitos.”
A similar episode occurred about ten days ago, when Santos ultras ambushed and attacked with stones a bus with Athletico Paranaense fans on its way to the city of São Paulo.
