The ruling Georgian Dream party achieved an absolute majority in Georgia’s parliamentary elections this Saturday by reaching 53% of the votes in its favor, according to the first results, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) reported.
Until now, the electoral authorities have scrutinized the 70% of polling stationswhich corresponds to a total of 2,176.
They are followed by the opposition blocks Coalition for Changeswith 11.2%, Unidad, with 9.8%, Georgia Fuerte, with 9.04%, and Gajaria for Georgia, with 8.2%, so the four opposition blocs access Parliament by exceeding the threshold of 5%.
This result will allow the ruling party create a government alonesomething that the opposition sought to prevent.
Approach to the Kremlin
Georgian Dream is criticized by the opposition and the West for his approach to the Kremlinexpressed in the refusal to join the sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraine, the establishment of flights between both countries and the approval of several repressive laws similar to existing standards in Russia.
The four opposition coalitions – Unity, Coalition for Changes, Strong Georgia and Gajaria for Georgia – They had agreed to form a technical Government in case Georgian Dream did not achieve the parliamentary majority, a possibility that disappears given the trend of the results of the scrutiny.
The elections, which were attended by more than 1,700 foreign observers of 76 international organizations and more than 23,000 local observers from 111 national organizations, passed in relative calm, although several altercations, fights and other violations took place.
The main novelties of these elections are that for the first time the seats will be distributed solely on the basis of proportional system and that close to 90% of voters will have the possibility of voting electronically.
The Central Electoral Commission announced that it will make public the first preliminary results two hours after the closing of the polling stations, at 10:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT).
