There is no city in the world more or less important than Don’t have an Irish pub. Pints of Guinness, live music, wood decoration… The pattern is almost always repeated no matter where we are.
Despite this, a instagrammer has decided to set himself a curious challenge: visit all the Irish pubs in the world. The creator, who is precisely Irish and is called Colm Daltonhas already visited 94 pubs in 49 different countries.
Dalton has recounted his experiences in a report published by the Daily Mailand for example, it has a method to know if the pub will be good or not: “The first way to judge it is the name. If it’s named after an Irish family, like Quinn’s or Keane’s, you know it’s going to be good because it’s probably named after the person who founded it. At the other end of the scale, if it’s called the Shamrock Pub or the Guinness Pub, it’s not going to be good.”
Regarding his favorites, he recommends the pub Patrick Foley’s in Ghent (Belgium)which is “a beautiful canalside pub with a huge Celtic art mural in the beer garden.” Colm Dalton also loves Kelly’s in Austin, Texas (USA). He says: “It’s in a shopping centre, but it looks like an Irish cottage. It’s authentic.”
“The environment is important because it can be dead and that totally changes your perception. I was in one in Lisbon called O’Gillins on a Wednesday night and it was packed, with a live band and everyone singing. “It was the perfect mix of Portuguese nightlife but in an Irish pub,” says Dalton.
But there are also some surprises, like the one who lived in Spain: “In Bilbao, the locals drank a drink called ‘Frankenstein’, which is half Guinness and half Heineken. And it’s a little dark on the top and yellowish green on the bottom. I couldn’t bring myself to drink it.”
What does this traveler think makes Irish pubs so popular around the world? “In many countries there are cafes and clubs, but there is no third space. And I think an Irish pub fulfills that. In some cities, the Irish pub is the alternative pub you go to if you want to feel like a frustrated poet. Then, definitely exists a process of imitation where someone sees a nice pub and thinks they should recreate it,” he concludes.
