Íñigo Errejón laid the first stone in Podemos back in 2014. The same formation as now, and once they have come to light anonymous accusations against him by sexist behaviorspositions itself on the side of the victims of “sexual violence” and celebrates that they are beginning to break their silence and, above all, that the “impunity” of powerful and famous people is beginning to break.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), as Errejón did hours before to communicate his departure from Sumar and all his political responsibilitiesthe now MEP and former Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, has referred to the men “with power” those who until now “were protected too many times.” Thus, without directly pointing out Sumar’s former spokesperson in Congress, he has alluded to the alleged sexist behavior attributed to Errejón on social networks.
On that same channel, the person who was head of Equality with Podemos in the previous Government of Pedro Sánchez has urged to “change this dynamic of the rape culture“, again without mentioning the founder of Podemos, as part of a “task that feminism sets for all of us.” “In any case of sexual violence, the victims and those who accompany them come first: that they do not feel alone, that they feel protection and not fear, and that ending impunity is part of their reparation,” reads part of the message.
Montero also thanked the journalist for her work. Cristina You Will Fail for offering “a safe place” to victims. Fallarás, a left-wing activist who closed Ada Colau’s lists in the Barcelona municipal elections in 2019, published on her Instagram profile the anonymous testimony of a woman in which she narrated episodes of sexist violence by “a politician who lives in Madrid” and which, later, other alleged victims identified as Errejón.
For her part, the general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, has conveyed her “backing and support to the victims and, particularly, to those who have had the courage to make a public testimonyeven if anonymous, to break the silence. In a television interview on Cuatro, Belarra celebrated that “for the first time” influential people with “a lot of power and fame” are seeing how “their impunity is breaking down.”
Asked directly about Errejón and her activism in Podemos, a group from which she left in 2019 to join Más Madrid, Belarra wanted, however, to be «extremely cautious»knowing, he continued, «what is the history of strong confrontation between Podemos and Íñigo Errejón». «What we have to do is support the victims, the women who take a step forward. That’s what needs to be done right now. I think the person who has to give all the explanations is Íñigo Errejón and, of course, the organizations to which he has belonged for more than five years, which are Más Madrid and more recently Sumar,” he concluded.
