The Olivenza City Council (Badajoz) has a debt of 1,600,000 euros with the Stateand to settle it, its mayor, Manuel José González Andrade, presented to the full Council a adjustment plan that would allow this amount to be returned in 15 years instead of 2, but was rejected by the opposition who made his resignation a condition or the presentation of a question of confidence.
The State had to take charge of the payment to suppliers once The City Council failed to meet the deadlines and has had to comply with the measures of the Ministry of Finance, including approving an adjustment plan for the monthly repayment of the loan.
González Andrade was invested as mayor by the UI abstentionwho in the plenary session held last night on October 23, joined the demands of the PP to demand a resignation that did not come, so the PP and IU do not rule out a motion of censure to elect the new councilor.
The first mayor spoke of a “campaign of harassment and demolition” by the municipal opposition and, keeping his word, he finally did not resign. Given the new panorama, González Andrada stressed that from this moment on, measures will have to be adopted to reduce municipal expenses, and this will mean “a hack to the Oliventinos in the next two years”, because the sum of the debt will have to be returned in two years.
PP and IU voted against the adjustment plan, understanding that it is the result of poor management of the government team. This adjustment plan proposed raising the Economic Activities Tax and those levied on empty homes and large companies.
In this plenary session the opposition also raised a question of confidence to the mayor, who affirms that will continue to lead the municipal corporation. González Andrade asked the population for peace of mind, stating that Olivenza is not bankrupt.
Opposition Assessments
The Plenary of this town of about 11,800 inhabitants is made up of 8 councilors from the PSOE, 7 from the PP and two from IU-Unidas por Extremaduraand thanks to the abstention of this last formation, González was invested as mayor. But at this moment, Izquierda Unida points to the current mayor as “most responsible” of the “crisis” that the municipality is currently experiencing. Therefore, to approve this plan they demanded the irrevocable resignation of the mayor so that another person from the PSOE could assume leadership and manage this serious situation, which is why they voted against the plan presented.
The PP not only rejected the adjustment plan, but demanded that Manuel González was submitted to a question and vote of confidenceBy not doing so, they could lead a motion of censure to elect the new councilor.
