Two bodies have been confused and one of them, which his family was going to bury, was finally cremated by mistake in Cádiz. This is not the first time something like this has happened.. Already in May of last year, the remains of a young British man were cremated in Puerto Real, mistaken for a German. Now it has happened again, this time with a man who died in Barbate, who was supposed to be buried in Malaga, but who was cremated believing he was a lady from Cádiz.
Earlier this week, a man, whose family resides in Malaga, died apparently of natural causes in the Barbate area. The body was taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of Cádiz so that the autopsy could be performed. In parallel, the body of an elderly person who had not been seen by neighbors for days was located. Upon entering her home they found the woman’s body, which was also taken to the aforementioned IML.
Thus, while the family of the deceased woman wanted her to be cremated, the man’s relatives asked that her remains be transferred to Malaga to be watched and the burial to take place in the Parcemasa cemetery. For reasons that are being investigated, the man’s body was cremated believing it was that of the woman. It was the funeral home, on the way to Malaga, that realized that the body it was carrying was that of a woman and not a man. So he reversed the transfer to find out what had happened.
The Junta de Andalucía has opened a prior information file to try to clarify what happened. This tells how the two bodies arrived at the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) of Cádiz, but identities were exchanged and a man from Malaga who wanted to be buried ended up being cremated, while the remains of a woman who was supposed to be cremated almost ended up being laid to rest in Malaga.
In a statement, the Ministry of Justice has “deeply regretted what happened” and points out that “it is a situation that should never have occurred.” Furthermore, they have apologized to the family and this has been conveyed to them by the IML management, insisting that they regret “very much” that due to this error they have not been able to give the chosen burial place to their relative.
In this regard, they have clarified that “as soon as they became aware of the events in the Cádiz Delegation, they opened a prior information filewhich already has an instructor appointed. This is the person in charge of collecting all the data to clarify the facts and circumstances that occurred in the procedure for the delivery of the bodies.
Another in Puerto Real
It is about know what error or errors have been committed in the application of existing protocols. According to the newspaper Sur, the events occurred between the province of Cádiz, where the error occurred, and that of Málaga, which was where knowledge of it occurred.
And the case is reminiscent of Puerto Real in May. A German and a British They died on the same dates. His mortal remains rested in the morgue of the Puerto Real Clinic, until the funeral home hired by the German’s family came to collect his body. Because of a mistake he took the other one.
The funeral company presented the documentation of the deceased German, but The British man’s body was taken to the cemetery Mancomunado of Chiclana, where he was cremated hours later.
After a few days, the confusion became known. The British man’s family went to the Puerto Real Hospital to collect a body, but it was not there. In the cold room of the morgue where he was supposed to be there was a German whose family already considered cremated. That’s where the error was discovered.
