Barack Obama rapped Eminem’s emblematic hit this Tuesday Lose Yourself before a crowd in Detroit during a campaign rally for Kamala Harris.
Also participating in the event was Eminem, who told the crowd in his hometown: “I don’t think anyone wants an America where people are worried about retaliation if they make their opinion known. “I believe Vice President Harris supports a future for this country where these freedoms and many others are protected and defended.”
“I have to say that I have given a lot of rallies, so I don’t usually get nervous, but coming out after Eminem is different,” Obama said at the beginning of his speech before moving to the first lines of Lose Yourself: ““I notice my palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy, vomit on my sweater already, mom’s spaghetti, I’m nervous but on the surface I look calm and ready to drop bombs but I keep on forgetting” [noto las palmas de las manos sudorosas, las rodillas débiles, los brazos pesados, ya tengo vómito en el jersey, los espaguetis de mamá, estoy nervioso pero en apariencia parezco tranquilo y listo para soltar bombas, pero se me olvida].
Obama joked that he thought Eminem would perform and that he would be a guest star, adding, “I love Eminem.”
The former president really likes music and shares his favorite songs twice a year in official publications on his social networks. The Summer 2024 selection included songs by contemporary pop names like Beyoncé, Tyla and Rema, along with older songs by Nick Drake, the Supremes and jazz musician Pharoah Sanders.
Obama continued to attack Donald Trump in his speech, recalling how Trump expressed doubts about the election results in 2020. “As Donald Trump was willing to spread lies about voter fraud in Michigan, protesters came down, banged on the windows, and yelled: ‘Let us in. Stop the count.’ Inside were intimidated poll workers…all because Donald Trump couldn’t accept losing…there is absolutely no evidence that this man thinks of anyone but himself.”
He questioned Trump’s mental fitness for the role of president, saying: “It would be concerning if your grandfather was acting like this, but this is coming from someone who wants unchecked power.”
He also referenced Trump’s rally earlier this week, in which he worked in the kitchen and counter of a McDonald’s that was closed to the public. Harris worked at McDonald’s when she was in college to pay her way, Obama recalled. “I didn’t mean to pretend I worked at McDonald’s when it was closed.”
Tim Walz, who also spoke at the rally, denounced the maneuver as “cosplaying… Fake orders for fake customers.” He also appealed to freedom of speech, saying that Trump was “talking about sending the military against people who don’t support him. “He is giving names.”
