Podemos Andalucía has activated its primary process to renew the current leadership starting in the first week of November, when the deadline for registering pre-candidacies opens. The first to take a step forward is the spokesperson for Podemos Sevilla and the only councilor of the purple formation in the Seville City Council, Susana Hornillo, who in the last municipal elections led a coalition of eight left-wing parties.
The candidacy of Hornillo (Alcalá de Guadaíra, 11976), advanced by the newspaper Público, represents a project to revive and “reinforce” the Podemos brand in the face of the Andalusian elections of 2026. Or in other words: it is an autonomous project far from the call that the Communist Party of Andalusia (PCA) made a few days ago to form the coalition of left-wing parties that will compete together in the next electoral processes. The communists champion the idea of unity, as the only option to be an alternative to the PP government and the push of Vox.
Unity yes or no – and in what way – was the cornerstone of the debate in the last Andalusian elections, in June 2022, in which Podemos, IU and other left-wing groups ended up stumbling a coalition in extremis, sewn together with knives in the middle. public square, and which resulted in a divided parliamentary group, with five seats and six political parties. Hornillo starts from the premise that that – the Por Andalucía coalition, where there are three purple deputies – was a mistake, and also considers the Sumar project led by Yolanda Díaz in the general elections a “failure”.
The spokesperson for the purple party in Seville shares a bench with an IU councilor, they are the only two representatives of a coalition that was created ad hoc for the municipal elections, and that failed to revalidate the four seats they had. The result was the victory against the odds of the popular José Luis Sanz, who governs in a minority, because the sum of PSOE and the coalition to his left was insufficient.
Hornillo aspires to succeed the current secretary general of Podemos Andalucía, the deputy in Congress Martina Velarde, who has not yet clarified whether she will run for re-election. Sources close to the woman from Córdoba consider it ruled out, they assure that she has too much work in the lower house, now that the purples only have four seats and are in the mixed group.
In any case, Hornillo’s political strategy is not far from that of Velarde, both are close to the postulates of Pablo Iglesias, Ione Belarra and Irene Montero, very critical of Sumar and of left-wing unity projects that after the elections “end failing to fulfill their commitments to voters.”
The primary processes to renew the regional leadership of Podemos start on November 4 in Andalusia, Galicia, Extremadura, Euskadi and Castilla-La Mancha. From November 4 to 7 will be the deadline to register pre-candidacies for the general secretary, the Autonomous Citizen Council and the Democratic Guarantees Commission.
On the 8th, individual pre-candidacies will be published, which will have from November 10 to 13 to present personal and collegiate endorsements. On Saturday the 23rd, the final candidates and lists will be made public. Voting will be carried out electronically from Monday, November 25 to 29.
