The Podemos MEP Irene Montero has been forced to remove her Palestinian headscarf in order to speak in the debate on a ceasefire in Lebanon in the Eurochamber.
“They say that the rules require us to take off the Palestinian headscarf. The rules also prohibit genocides and here is Europe supporting one,” Montero responded at the beginning of his speech, after having to leave the stage to leave his black and white scarf.

The vice president of the European Parliament, Christel Schaldemose, asked Montero to remove his scarf. “Mrs. Montero can speak, but first take off your scarf“, he stated.
At the beginning of his argument, Montero asked “why support continues to be given to genocidaires”, denouncing the arms trade that the European Union maintains with Israel. Furthermore, the MEP has described what is happening in Gaza as an “invasion” and “genocide.”
Likewise, he has stated that Israel’s attack on the UN peacekeeping mission is “a Israel’s act of war against European countries that have also done nothing” and has demanded that the European Commission call genocide “genocide” and stop participating in “Zionist propaganda saying that Israel has the right to defend itself.”
At the end of Montero’s intervention, a point of order was raised by a MEP from the bench of the chamber who appealed to “maintain” calm in the Chamber. “As MEPs, we cannot raise political signals and this Palestinian scarf prevents us from reflecting and should be banned in this chamber and not just sit there in a seat,” said a member of the European Parliament, who called for a ban on the entry of kufiyas Palestinians in the Strasbourg Parliament.
