‘The Wheel of Inequality’ by elDiario.es wins the Injuve Prize for Journalism and Communication 2024

“The wheel of inequality”, a project by elDiario.es, wins the 2024 Injuve Journalism and Communication Awards in the written journalism category. The research, carried out by Raúl Sánchez, Victòria Oliveres and Ainhoa Díez, reconstructs the gears that form the cycle of inequality in Spain, a circle that is reproduced generation after generation and that reduces the opportunities of those born in the poorest neighborhoods.

The awards, organized by the Youth Institute, INJUVE, seek to recognize with this call the work of journalists or communicators up to 35 years old who have contributed to the promotion, defense and dissemination of civic, social and equality values.

With a narrative focused on the human stories behind the numbers, the “Wheel of Inequality” project explores how place of birth and family origin influence the probability of climbing the social elevator. Combining a rigorous analysis of multiple databases with traditional journalistic work, the investigation x-rays the chain of obstacles that hinder the social mobility of those born in families with fewer resources. From childhood to the labor market.

The investigation weaves together a complex phenomenon influenced by hundreds of factors based on the testimonies of Elsa, Iker and Milagros, who star in the reality behind the numbers. Stories that explain the wheel of inequality that marks since childhood: residential segregation, the educational system, school dropouts, home conditions, family expectations or the social stigmas of poverty.

The Injuve Awards have also recognized projects in the radio journalism category: “Abortion, a pending subject in universities”, published in El País and carried out by journalist Belén Remacha, “El preso de la cell 433”, published in Cadena SER and carried out by journalist Víctor Olazábal; and in the audiovisual journalism category, “In first person: Start again”, published on RTVE and directed by Sara Mosleh Moreno, David Pérez Sieira and Ainara Pérez Muñoz.
