Yellow lines and tartar in the toilet: cleaning tricks to eliminate them

The bathroom, along with the kitchen, is the area of the house where cleaning usually requires the most time, effort and attention. Both the periodic and more frequent one, and the one we normally do on a weekly basis with a little more depth. Within toilets and bathrooms, the toilet is, for obvious reasons, one of the pieces that requires the most cleaning and that we must keep clean and disinfected. For reasons not only aesthetic, but also hygiene and health.

Its daily use generates an accumulation of thousands of bacteria that can be harmful to the people who use it if it is not cleaned and disinfected properly and with the necessary frequency. Furthermore, neglecting toilet hygiene leads to the appearance of tartar in the toilet bowl that accumulates in the form of unpleasant yellow lines.

The first thing we recommend if you are going to clean your bathroom is that you use gloves to protect yourself from fungi and bacteria that have already settled in the toilet or other parts of the bathroom. Although there are many specific products on the market to thoroughly clean the toilet and some are also very effective, we are going to tell you five home methods that you can put into practice and that will also give you very good results.

Home methods

In case you didn’t know, the yellow lines of tartar that appear in your toilet and that seem so complicated to eliminate at first, are formed by the constant passage of water. The harder the water in your area and the higher concentrations of calcium and magnesium it contains, the more likely you are to be splashed by these stains.

  • For one of the formulas that we are going to give you, you only need to have baking soda and white vinegar at home. They are two products that we usually have in the pantry because they are multipurpose and serve us on many occasions. If they are not common in your cleaning closet, think about incorporating them. You will find them in any supermarket or neighborhood store. The power of baking soda lies in the fact that it is abrasive and, therefore, ideal for breaking down dirt. Vinegar, for its part, does the same with tartar and has a high disinfectant power. What will we do? The first thing will be to sprinkle the baking soda on the stains, we will let it act for about 15 minutes and then we will spray with vinegar (which will produce an effervescence reaction) and finally, we will rub with the toilet brush to finish by flushing the toilet and letting it drain. Rinse with water from the cistern.
  • For the second of the tricks that we are going to tell you, we will need vinegar again but, this time, with lemon. We will fill half a cup with vinegar and then add the juice of one lemon. Both are very effective as antiseptics and disinfectants. With a sponge we will spread this mixture over the stains on our toilet, which with its acid will be enough to remove the dirt without too much effort.
  • The third method uses baking soda with hydrogen peroxide, which we also usually have in the medicine cabinet to disinfect wounds but is widely used as a home cleaning remedy. On this occasion, we will use 125 ml of hydrogen peroxide, to which we will add four tablespoons of baking soda in a cup. We are going to apply the resulting paste to the toilet stains. Again, we will let it act for 15 to 20 minutes to finish rinsing.

Formulas for the most stubborn dirt

Among the multipurpose products that we find in the supermarket or stores specialized in cleaning products, one of the most effective for stubborn dirt is ammonia. So if you have already tried the other three methods without success, we recommend that you get a bottle of this product and get to work, as it will mean that the limescale stains on your toilet have already become embedded. in such a way that less abrasive solutions are not valid.

Ammonia is a fairly strong product. Don’t forget to put on gloves before using it and open your bathroom windows, if you have ventilation. Pour the product on the stains on the toilet bowl, let it sit for a while, scrub well with a brush and rinse.

Another formula is to use pumice stone, associated with exfoliation of the skin. To use it, we are going to heat water in a pot, soak the stone in it and then we can rub the stains.

The yellow lines produced by tartar are not the only dirt we have to deal with to keep our toilet clean. At the bottom, a brown stain usually appears that seems very difficult to remove, but with the right instructions we can also clean it easily.

Any of the methods we have indicated above would be effective, but first you have to get rid of the toilet water that covers that dirt. It is easy by inserting a mop into the toilet to remove the water little by little. Once dry, we can put into practice the methods described above.

Keeping dirt at bay guarantees good hygiene in our bathrooms, keeping us away from infections that can be caused by an accumulation of bacteria and fungi, as well as the bad odors that bathrooms sometimes give off. To avoid them, it is best to carry out at least a couple of cleanings a week in this area of the house.
