Pope Francis has stressed that we cannot “close the door to immigrants”, shortly after the Rome court on Friday forced the return to Italy of the immigrants interned in the large internment camp built in Gjadër, which has caused a judicial setback to the so-called ‘Albania model’ with which the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, intended to stop irregular immigration.
«The migrant must be welcomed, accompanied, promoted and integrated. In his hands he will make everyone grow,” the Pontiff stressed in a short video message addressed to the participants of the national conference of presidents and diocesan assistants of Italian Catholic Action, which is taking place in Sacrofano (Rome).
Thus, Francis has confirmed that Jesus’ command is “give them food.” «Give them your hand to accompany them. Give them a hand so that they do not find themselves submerged, especially migrants,” the Pontiff remarked.
Furthermore, he assured that in the Old Testament three people in need are continually mentioned: the widow, the sick and the migrant. “God loves the migrant very much, he takes care of them,” he said.
Of the first group of 16 people deported to Albania last week by the military ship ‘Libra’, four returned on Friday, two because they were minors and two others due to their vulnerable situation, and this Saturday, the remaining twelve. The Italian government has already warned that it will appeal the sentence, but this Monday, in the meantime, an extraordinary council of ministers is scheduled to be held.
