This past Sunday, the citizens of Moldova were called to vote on a day in which had to elect the next president of the country and respond in referendum constitutional on a possible future accession to the European Union.
The referendum on the proposal to include the country’s entry into the European Union (EU) in the Constitution as a national objective has ended in a technical tie. The Yes has obtained 50.07% of the votes in favor, while the No has remained at 49.93%according to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC).
Regarding the presidential elections, the Moldovan president and candidate for re-election, Maia Sandu, obtained 41.92% of the votes in Sunday’s elections and extends his lead to more than 15 points over his main rival, the pro-Russian Alexandr Stoianoglowith who It will be measured in the second round on November 3after the counting of 98.29% of the votes cast, according to the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova.
The Yes turned the result around during the last hours after the Moldovan president, Maia Sandu, report fraud in the votein a clear accusation of groups close to Russia.
“We have evidence and information that a criminal group intended to buy 300,000 votes. This is an unprecedented fraud whose objective is to compromise democracy. Their objective is to sow fear and panic in society,” said the president in a very brief appearance before the media.
“Today, as in recent months, freedom and democracy in Moldova have been the subject of an unprecedented attack,” Sandu stressed.
“Criminal groups, associated with foreign forces, attacked our country with lies and propaganda (…) We will not stop defending freedom and democracy. We will wait for the definitive results and we will return with solutions,” added the Moldovan president.
During the last weeks both the EU and the United States denounced numerous attempts by Moscow to destabilize the situation in Moldova with a view to the European referendum.
Sunday’s popular consultation was boycotted by the Kremlin candidate, Alexandr Stoianoglo, and also by his other great supporter, the former socialist president, Igor Dodona close ally of the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin.
