The launch of the Epic Games Store on mobile phones – it has been available on computers since 2018 – has been possible thanks to the new EU Digital Markets Law, which forces Apple and Google to allow other companies to distribute apps on their devices. through alternative stores. In fact, Fortnite It can not only be downloaded through the Epic Games Store, but also through other alternative stores, such as the AltStore PAL for iOS in the European Union. Something that will become more and more common
A new gibberish of digital stores
All these names of alternative digital stores may seem like gibberish to ordinary users, but it is a new reality that has every chance of becoming more and more common when it comes to downloading an app on our device. It is also the result of years of legal disputes in which Epic Games has accused Apple and Google of exercising a monopoly and unfair competitive practices.
In August 2020, Apple and Google removed Fortnite from their respective digital stores after Epic Games implemented an alternative payment system within the game itself. Through this system, players could make purchases at a lower price and without having to go through the Apple and Google payment platform. Instantly, both companies withdrew the game, citing the fact that Epic Games had violated the rules of its digital store.
The origin of this bitter legal dispute has always been eminently economic. Especially, it has to do with the famous 30 percent that Apple and Google take from each transaction that takes place in their digital stores. This commission, which app and video game developers have been considering abusive for years, was what led the CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, to stand up to the two technological giants, a legal battle whose main consequence is the mandatory nature – at least in the EU – of the opening of alternative stores.
Sweeney himself has revealed that maintaining the different lawsuits against Apple and Google have cost Epic Games a sum of more than one billion dollars. “If so far we have spent a billion dollars, it is a small price to pay for the future freedom of our company and all the others that want to participate in the market,” he stated in statements to the media Game File.
