A 27-year-old woman of Argentine nationality has been arrested by the National Police after trying to kill her six-year-old daughter by suffocating her with a cushion at her family home in Palma. The mother called the ambulance when she realized that the girl was having a seizure. She is accused of an alleged crime of attempted murder.
The UFAM of the National Police learned of the events after the girl was admitted to a hospital. The mother explained to the doctors that the girl felt pressure in her chest while they were watching television on the couch at home. However, the little girl had injuries in her mouth consistent with an attempted asphyxiation.
After being discharged, the minor told her caregiver that her mother had tried to suffocate her with a pillow until she lost consciousness. The caregiver alerted the Police and the agents of the Family and Women’s Unit (UFAM) that the girl was afraid to return home and did not want to be with her mother.
The agents began an investigation to clarify the facts and after taking several statements they found out that the mother had allegedly taken a cushion to try to suffocate the girl. The minor began to convulse and it was at that moment that the mother realized what she was doing and called an ambulance.
The agents have arrested the alleged murderer, who has been brought to justice and has exercised her right not to testify. The girl has been left in the care of a relative while child protection services have been activated.
