There are already long traffic jams on the Brenner motorway. The traffic situation is unlikely to get any better in the coming weeks and months.
Innsbruck – Traffic disruptions are currently on the agenda on the Brenner motorway. Last weekend there were kilometers of traffic jams on the important transit route between Austria and Italy. This is likely to remain the case in the coming weeks. The reason for this is a new regulation from the state of Tyrol.
The bridge renovation planned for 2025 on the Brenner Motorway is already casting its shadow. Because asphalting work has to be carried out on the roadway on the Luegbrücke before the actual repairs, traffic on the A13 and A22 can only move in one lane in some places.
Austrian federal state Tyrol extends driving bans on the Brenner motorway
Holidaymakers and truck drivers already felt this last weekend at the Lueg Bridge and the border tunnel. A lot of patience will continue to be necessary. The government of Tyrol extended the ban on skiing in the Wipptal. It affects all exits on the motorway between Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass. This regulation applies to vehicles transiting through Tyrol and should be lifted by the end of November at the latest.
Referring to the travel traffic to the south, which now extends “all year round”, Tyrol’s governor Anton Mattle said at a press conference on Tuesday (October 15th): “The traffic is hitting Tyrol with full force. But Tyrol cannot and does not want to build wider roads. That’s why we are the only region that has introduced massive bans on departures.” These should now be monitored more closely. Mattle announced that it would increase “the country’s traffic regulators.”
Traffic disruptions on the Brenner motorway are likely to last for a long time
Mattle reported on increasingly sensitive controls off the Brenner motorway: “Inspectors and law enforcement report that they being insulted by annoyed drivers.” To those passing through direction Italy The head of the country sent a clear message: “Stay on the highway and the main traffic arteries and do not block the traffic routes of the local population. You don’t want your home community to be overwhelmed by an avalanche of metal either.”
It is doubtful whether things will get better on the Brenner motorway from December. Already off From January 2025, the Lueg Bridge will only have one lane in both directions be, for security reasons, as they say. The renovation is expected to begin in the spring. However, the state of Tyrol announced that traffic would be in two lanes on 170 days during the travel period. (mt)
