Mexico City.- Rosario Piedra Ibarra will seek re-election in the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), which she has headed since November 2019.
Piedra Ibarra reported his decision through his social networks, just when the convocation process opened in the Senate.
The current Ombudsperson is expected to appear before committees like any other candidate who wishes to head the CNDH. “I think it is important to inform you that I have registered in the Senate of the Republic to run for a second term as head of this National Commission. I have done so, because I am convinced that thanks to the work of all of you, we have made a lot of progress in the transformation of the CNDH, but we still have to consolidate it,” he explained in an internal communication.
Rosario Ibarra de Piedra’s daughter asked the staff that no financial, personal, or time resources of the CNDH be used to promote their intention.
“I want to enter this race without any advantage, only presenting the results of our five years of work,” he said. After the committees complete the appearances, the Senate Political Coordination Board will send a shortlist of candidates to the plenary session to elect the head of the CNDH. Just this month, the PAN proposed in an initiative a reform with which a popular election would be held so that the people would elect whoever is in charge of the CNDH.
