The Israeli Prime Minister assured the US that he would only target military targets in retaliation against Iranian attacks
The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud, right), told the President of the United States, Joe Biden (Democrat), that the Israeli army will not attack Iran’s nuclear and oil plants. The statement was made in a phone call on 9 October among the leaders. The information is from Washington Post.
Netanyahu reportedly suggested to Biden that he would retaliate against Iran on military installations, in order to avoid an attack that would lead to an escalation of the conflict.
According to White House sources consulted by Postthe Israeli plan to avoid nuclear targets was met with relief by US officials. The country feared a tougher Israeli offensive against important Iranian infrastructure.
An attack on the Iranian oil system could result in an increase in fuel prices on the eve of the US election on November 5th. Another US concern is that the escalation of tensions would lead to possible intervention in the conflict.
Even with more moderate promises, the Israeli government maintains its discourse of retaliation against Iran. “We listen to the views of the United States, but we will make our final decisions based on our national interest”said Netanyahu in a statement this Tuesday (Oct 15).
