BLACKOUT IN SP
A new blackout that hit the city of São Paulo and the metropolitan region on Friday (11.Oct). This is the 2nd major blackout to hit the city in 1 year, but problems at the distributor are not restricted to the State.
Enel is an Italian company, still with state participation from the Italian government, which took over Eletropaulo’s operations in 2018. It is considered the 2nd largest electricity distributor in the country in terms of number of consumers – behind only Cemig. In Brazil, it has operations in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Ceará. In November 2023, São Paulo experienced a major blackout that left the city and metropolitan region without electricity for 4 days. The blackout was the result of the storm recorded in several cities in the state and which left 7 people dead.
Here is the full note released by Enel on October 14:
“Enel Distribuição São Paulo received reinforcements from teams from other energy distribution groups, such as Light, Neoenergia, Elektro, EDP, to work in the company’s concession area. Enel also mobilized professionals from its distributors in Chile, Italy, Spain and Argentina, as well as teams from Rio de Janeiro and Ceará, who arrived at the weekend. With this increase, the number of professionals in the field will reach 2,900 technicians.
“By 2pm on Monday, Enel had restored power to around 1,700 customers, and on Friday, 2,100 customers were affected. The teams continue working to restore service to around 400,000 customers (2pm on Monday) after the storm and strong winds of more than 107 km/h last Friday (11).
“In addition to the impacts on low voltage networks, 17 high voltage lines and 11 substations were disconnected during the heavy rain. The damage to the high voltage network was resolved on Saturday. At low and medium voltage, the impacts were severe and dispersed throughout the concession area. Repairs to low voltage networks involve replacing kilometers of cables, poles, among other equipment.
“The cities most affected were São Paulo, at the moment, with 283 thousand homes without electricity, especially in the Jabaquara, Santo Amaro, Pedreira and Campo Limpo neighborhoods; Cotia with 31 thousand customers without power; and Taboão da Serra with 32 thousand impacted. In an agreement made with Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency), the company will meet a three-day deadline to fully restore energy supply to all customers.
“To meet critical cases, Enel has made 500 generators (40 large) available for essential services, such as hospitals, and customers who depend on electricity to maintain hospital equipment, for example.
“Enel Distribuição São Paulo is investing around R$6.2 billion in São Paulo from 2024 to 2026. Within the investment plan are: strengthening and modernization of networks, automation of systems, expansion of the capacity of communication channels with customers and hiring its own employees to work in the field. In São Paulo, a total of 1,200 electricians are being hired by March 2025.”
