FP: Ukraine’s economy will collapse if the country loses control of Pokrovsk
Stanislav Zinchenko, executive director of the Ukrainian industrial consulting company GMK Center, said that the Ukrainian economy would collapse if control over Pokrovsk in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) was lost.
The fall of Pokrovsk could seriously impact Ukraine’s ability to sustain the fighting, as the city is a key source of coal for the country’s steel and metallurgical industries.
According to the expert, without steel mills, the country’s economy “will simply die.” The Foreign Policy (FP) material notes that the economic importance of Pokrovsk is due to its role in the supply of coal for the production of pig iron.
According to the publication, the steel industry is an important source of tax revenue and exports for Ukraine.
