Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, the activities of the third session of the “Liwa Dates Festival and Auction” began today, Friday, in Madinat Zayed in the Al Dhafra Region, and will continue until October 20.
The festival, organized by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, hosts the Republic of Iraq, as the guest of honor for this session, with the aim of strengthening ties, exchanging agricultural experiences, and strengthening relations between the two countries in vital sectors.
The festival seeks to consolidate its position as one of the most important international heritage events by encouraging the production and processing of dates and displaying the finest varieties, contributing to achieving the food security strategy, motivating farmers and date producers to improve the quality of their products, and exchanging experiences and research in the field of palm cultivation.
The festival celebrates the date harvesting season in the country for the year 2024 and includes 20 competitions for which 167 prizes are allocated, including 9 competitions for dates (Liwa for elite dates, Al-Dabbas, Al-Khalas, Al-Fard, Al-Shishi, Yumaan, Al-Zamili, in addition to packaging dates without additives, packaging dates with additives). Two cooking competitions (International Hotels category, Productive Families category), five honey competitions (liquid honey, wax tablet, crystallized honey, Sidr honey, Samar honey), two photography competitions (palm trees theme, Al Dhafra environment theme), and the same for drawing (palm trees theme, Al Dhafra Environment Hub.
The festival also witnesses a daily date auction, the most important event closest to the hearts of date lovers, during which Emirati dates of all types and quality are displayed to interested visitors, who will have the opportunity to acquire luxury dates by bidding on date display tables.
The festival offers various activities that support the agricultural sector and the date industry in the country, with the participation of government and private agencies, with pavilions that provide interactive programs and awareness platforms for farmers and visitors through daily activities.
The festival includes a popular market, shops selling dates and agricultural tools, a honey village, a traditional crafts corner, two drawing and photo exhibitions, the “Kenaz” art studio, a studio, and other distinctive corners that offer visitors a unique experience, in addition to many diverse performances by the Abu Dhabi Folklore Troupe.
