The TV was still on when the firefighters found him: he had been dead for several days
Lonato del Garda, province of Brescia, is the scene of yet another tragedy loneliness. On Thursday morning, October 10, firefighters found the body of a 68-year-old man inside his home. He lay lifeless on the couch, dead for days now. A drama that highlights, once again, the conditions of abandonment that often surrounds the elderly.
It had been nearly two weeks since anyone had last heard from the 68-year-old. Neither his ex-wife nor his daughter-in-law had been able to contact him and they decided to personally go to his home. Already from the outside, the situation appeared suspicious: the television it was still on, but no one responded to repeated attempts to ring the doorbell or knock on the door. What the two women perceived was a disturbing smell coming from inside the apartment. An alarm bell that led to calling 112.
When the firefighters arrived, the door had to be broken down to gain access to the house. Inside, time seemed to have stopped: the deserted house, the TV filling the void and, on the sofa, the now lifeless body of the 68-year-old. It had been there for days, without anyone noticing. The rescue efforts were of no avail, with an ambulance called for possible support: the man was already deceased for a long time.
There are no signs of forced entry on the door nor traces of violence on the man’s body. The findings carried out by the Desenzano carabinieri, who intervened on site, confirm that the man died alone.
The loneliness of the elderly: a silent plague
It’s a sad script that repeats itself too frequently. The elderly man lived alone and, apparently, did not have a constant relationship with his family. Two weeks of silence did not arouse immediate suspicion, perhaps a sign of that distance that often separates people who in theory should be closer. And so, when the alarm was finally raised, it was too late.
The case of Lonato del Garda it is only the latest in a long series of tragedies involving the elderly, often forgotten by society and by their families themselves. These lives that pass away in silence remind us how loneliness is an insidious evil, capable of killing slowly. In Italy, the phenomenon of elderly people left alone is constantly growing: thousands of people live without an adequate family or social support network. Many of them don’t see anyone for days, weeks, sometimes even months.
The 68-year-old’s body was transferred to the Desenzano hospital morgue, where further medical-legal investigations will be carried out. But the truth is already clear: the culprit is the inevitable spending of time in an apartment closed to the world of affection.
