The former Sevilla and legend of Real Madrid in LaLiga, Sergio Ramos, has been given a surprising opportunity to extend his illustrious career by five-time CAF Champions League winners Zamalek.
Cairo-based Zamalek are one of the heavyweights of Egyptian football: they have been national champions on 14 occasions and runners-up on a further 34 occasions over the years. They have also won 28 Egyptian Cups, including seven in the last 12 seasons.
But their continental heyday returned in the 1980s and 1990s, when they finished a distant third in the recently concluded 2024 edition of the Egyptian Premier League.
Ramos, 38, left Sevilla at the end of the 2023/24 campaign in Spain but is apparently not ready to hang up his boots yet as his services have been offered to clubs on his behalf.
“Some agents and mediators offered the possibility,” he explained to ESPN. Ahmed Shawky, Zamalek media coordinator. “Of course, Sergio Ramos is a fantastic player who won everything with Real Madrid and Spain. He would be a huge player for any team in the Middle East or Africa”.
The biggest obstacle at this stage has been the player’s salary expectations, which has prevented Zamalek – and presumably other interested clubs – from reaching an agreement.
A Zamalek director, Hani Shoukry, recently told a local broadcaster that Ramos “he agreed to play in Egypt” but that the “financial aspects” are the “main reason for not completing the agreement.”
Shawky added: “There is nothing concrete so far and the player is highly valued financially. We must also take into account that Zamalek have signed other centre-backs recently. [Pero] “It would be a great boost for Egyptian football and more prestige for Zamalek and the league.”.
Ramos played 671 games for Real Madrid between 2005 and 2021, scoring 101 goals. He won La Liga five times, as well as four UEFA Champions League titles, before moving to Paris Saint-Germain and returning to his boyhood club, Sevilla. For Spain, he played 180 times, a national team record, and won both European Championships and the World Cup in 2010.
