TCLthrough its subsidiary CSoT, is ready to start the production of OLED screens with inkjet technologyan innovative process that promises to reduce costs and waste compared to traditional methods.
The announcement comes after the previews made by TCL at the IFA in Berlin 2024. The Chinese company should start production by the end of the year, initially focusing on 21.5-inch panels intended for the medical sector.
OLED inkjet technology
But how do these new OLEDs work? Inkjet technology is in fact similar to the operation of common printers; in this way it allows the organic materials that make up the pixels to be deposited in a precise and efficient way, reducing waste of raw materials and machinery costs.
TCL acquired the assets of the Japanese JOLED, a pioneer in this field, which however failed to make the technology economically sustainable. TCL is confident that it can overcome the difficulties encountered by JOLED and bring production up to speed.
For the moment, however, the company will focus on relatively small panels; the possibility of using inkjet technology for the production of large screens, suitable for televisions, is not excluded, but at the moment there are no certain dates.
If TCL succeeds, it could give a strong boost to the diffusion of OLED screens, making them more accessible and contributing to greater environmental sustainability thanks to the reduction of waste.
What do you think? After TCL has started to dominate the LCD TV market, is there room for it to undermine Samsung and LG in OLED too? Tell us yours in the comments below.
