Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo
The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, which unites survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is stated in a statement on the website of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
“Nihon Hidankyo receives the Peace Prize for his efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through testimony that nuclear weapons should never be used again,” the committee said.
The Nobel Committee noted that nuclear weapons had not been used for almost 80 years, and the organization’s exceptional efforts contributed greatly to the establishment of the “nuclear taboo.”
Earlier, the British newspaper Financial Times (FT), citing sources and analysts, named the United Nations Refugee Relief Agency in the Near East (UNRWA) and the International Court of Justice, as well as UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, billionaire Elon Musk and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, as the main contenders for the award.
