The NBU appealed to Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Stefanchuk with a request to rename kopecks to steps
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) appealed to Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk with a request to support the initiative to rename the national currency coins from kopecks to steps. The text of the appeal was published by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy Danil Getmantsev in his Telegram-channel.
The agency reports that in order to achieve the goals of decommunization and de-Russification in the country, it is necessary to rename the penny a step, in order to thus finally break the connection with the “Kremlin narratives.” It is noted that the reform will not require spending from the budget, since pennies in use will not be withdrawn.
Earlier in Ukraine they already proposed to de-Russify the kopeck. The penny and the step will have a one-to-one ratio; the design of the step and the order of its introduction into circulation have not yet been established.
