At least one person has died and several have been injured this Thursday after they were trapped inside an elevator due to a failure at the Molloe Kathleen tourist mine, in the state of Colorado (United States).
At the time of the failure there were 23 people inside the elevator, including the fatal victim. Teller County authorities have indicated that at the moment the causes of death are unknown, which according to the sheriff, Jason Mikesell, “was the result of a tragic accident” and added that a full investigation will be necessary to discover what happened. .
What they have clarified is that the mine has not suffered any collapse and that the event occurred due to the failure of the mine equipment, whose last recorded accident was in 1986.
Some of the rescued people have suffered neck and back injuries, while others were “traumatized.” Among them were two minors, but it is unknown if they have been injured.
The mine, which offers one-hour guided tours in which visitors can “descend vertically one hundred stories underground” to “witness the evolution of open-pit mining,” was scheduled to close this Sunday to end the tourist season. 2024.
