Mexico City.– Minister Luis María Aguilar contradicted the voices that denigrate the work of the Court and accuse it of corruption, by asserting that precedents have been forged in the Supreme Court in the defense of human rights and showed a list of those sanctioned for illegal practices.
During a tribute paid at the UNAM Law School to his more than five decades of experience, the former president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) showed a sheet of paper that had 13 names written on it that he said were officials at different levels who were found guilty of corruption and referred to the corresponding authorities.
“We have never tolerated corruption either in the administrative areas or in the jurisdictional areas, because a person who is corrupt in any of its forms, because there are many, harms us all. It creates a wrong image that there is corruption in the Judicial Branch What we have found, we have fought it and we have fought it punctually,” he asserted. “There is not a person who has been captured or apprehended due to the knowledge of his corruption that has been forgiven. Here I bring a list that I am certainly not going to read to you, of officials, judges, magistrates that we sanctioned, dismissed and some of We even reported them to the then Attorney General’s Office because we do not tolerate corruption. There is no place for corrupt people in the Judicial Branch of the Federation and even less in the work of justice,” he said.
Prior to his retirement from the Court, scheduled for November 30, he reiterated the importance of defending independent and quality federal justice, to guarantee the human rights of citizens, as he stressed, has been done.
“Sometimes it is said that the Supreme Court has done nothing for the country and that we are just a handful of public servants who have privileges. That is not the case, the truth is, I have lived it for 55 years now and it is not that’s the truth,” Aguilar defended, alluding to his career in federal justice, which he began in 1968 as a shorthand typist. He recalled relevant rulings of the Court such as the decriminalization of abortion and the recognition of same-sex marriages, among many others that have made a difference in the lives of citizens. In the Aula Magna Jacinto Pallares, accompanied by his family and four Ministers of the Court, including the minister president of the SCJN, Norma Piña, as well as the former president of the INE, Lorenzo Córdova, Aguilar highlighted the importance of federal justice for stability of the country and the defense of human rights before any authority. “Federal justice is the best, perhaps the only defense, against the powerful and the arbitrary. We have never tolerated corruption either in the administrative areas or in the jurisdictional areas,” added Aguilar, who was president of the Court from 2015 to 2018, and endured repeated attacks from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador throughout the past six-year term. The minister, who preferred no longer to argue over the ongoing judicial reform, highlighted the transparency of the public sessions of the Plenary Session of the Court, where, he stated, There are no prior arrangements between the ministers. Meanwhile, the director of the Faculty of Law, Sonia Venegas, highlighted the work of the honoree and his defense of judicial independence, which she highlighted as necessary for the defense of individual guarantees. “Precisely in times of uncertainty, when the dynamics of power have attempted to alter the foundations of our democracy, Minister Luis María Aguilar has been a firm rock that has supported the core principles of law (…) reminding us that true value of a constitutional judge also lies in his ability to resist external pressures and safeguard the honorability of justice,” he noted. “The minister (Aguilar) is living proof that the judicial career and the academy are the essential paths to follow to train trained judges committed to legal standards. Excellence in the administration of justice is not the result of chance or luck , but of rigorous training and a life dedicated to public service,” he added.
