detroit.- Former President Donald Trump criticized Detroit this Thursday while making statements to an economic group there, saying that the entire country could end up like that city if his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, is elected.
Trump’s remarks came at the Detroit Economic Club in a speech to appeal to the auto industry, a key segment of the population in a major state, in Michigan’s largest city.
Although he made some conflicting statements about Detroit during his speech, saying it was a “developing city” in an apparent compliment.
Democrats in the city quickly criticized Trump for his comments. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan praised the city’s recent decline in crime and its growing population.
“Many cities should be like Detroit. We did all of this without Trump’s help,” he said on social media.
“Representative Shri Thanedar, who represents Detroit, said on social media that Trump “should stop talking about Detroit and our people.”
Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has been a top representative of the Democratic presidential ticket, lashed out at Trump, saying in X, “Detroit residents are not going to forget this in November.”
Trump’s comments came as many in the city feel Detroit has become the laughing stock of the country.
After almost a decade of embarrassing bankruptcy, the Automotive City has stabilized its finances, improved city services, and halted population loss as more than a million people left the city, which had not happened before. since the 1950s, and has managed to eradicate pests in 139 square miles.
Today, Detroit is a destination for conventions and meetings.
In April, Detroit had record attendance for the NFL Draft as more than 775,000 fans packed downtown for the three-day event.
