Former economy minister Paulo Guedes was in São Paulo this Thursday, 10th, criticizing the choice of the Lula government and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad to increase taxes. Despite this, he stated that the country “has everything ahead of it”. The statement took place at the CRM Bonus Conference event.
“Brazil attacks itself every day, but the window of opportunities has opened. We are at the forefront of the energy transition. We are a country that arrived at the ball at the end and is clean, ready to grow. But you need to make choices: whether the State will carry out this growth, increasing taxes, or whether it will focus on the private sector”, he said, without mentioning any name.
Liberal order is over
In another part of his statement, the former minister stated that the liberal order that was born with the end of the Cold War ended due to the political and social situation in the United States and the European Union.
“The West thought that democracies had won, but that is not true, it was the liberal order that won. Now, the world was at a funk party, everyone dancing, until the police arrived and put an end to everything. The liberal order first ended the trade war between the United States and China, then the covid-19 pandemic and, finally, the war between Russia and Ukraine. And don’t be surprised, this noise will increase. It’s not me who said that, it was Secretary (of the US Treasury) Janet Yellen”, he said.
Guedes also stated that the time of globalized production, where large companies shipped industry to China, is over and now EU countries and the United States will take production to “friendly countries”.
“We can no longer be exposed to that region (China). So we will bring production to friendly countries, India. India is the China of tomorrow,” he said.
Return to the public sector?
The economist’s name came into vogue this Thursday due to Mayor Ricardo Nunes’ statement that if former president Jair Bolsonaro nominates the economist’s name for his government, he will accept the nomination.
In July, the former minister was announced as chairman of the Board of investment manager Legend Capital and has the task of assembling and leading the team specializing in corporate restructuring.
