Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, lands in Rome and presents his ‘Plan for Victory’ to Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister to end the war with Russia and arrive at a “just peace”. “Thanks to Giorgia and the Italian government for their attention to this plan and our strategy”, says Zelensky after the meeting at Villa Pamphili. The Ukrainian president stops in Italy on a day characterized by meetings in London with the prime minister British Keir Starmer and in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron.
”I thank Italy and you personally Giorgia for having strongly and sincerely supported Ukraine and our people during the war. I hope to be able to discuss the conditions of peace as soon as possible,” says the Ukrainian leader. The plan illustrated to Meloni aims to “protect our independence, our families, our citizens”.
Ukraine is preparing to face the third winter of war. The conflict with Russia began 960 days ago. Russia bombs cities and infrastructure on a daily basis. The latest raid hit Odessa, causing at least 8 deaths. Zelensky, at a crucial moment of the conflict, extends a ”special thanks” to Meloni for ”assistance to the security of our country” and for ”defense aid”. In the meeting, explains the president, a new security package for Ukraine was ”discussed” and Meloni was provided with news and updates on the ”situation at the front”.
Peace will be followed by reconstruction: a conference dedicated to the topic will be held in Rome on 10 and 11 July next year. In the meeting at Villa Pamphili, Zelensky also illustrated to the prime minister ”the economic points of our victory plan”. ”It is important for us that Italian companies are present in the reconstruction project in Ukraine,” he says, highlighting the ”economic opportunities” in the post-war period and underlining that “the economic resources that must not end up in Russian hands, under the Russian control”.
The same plan for victory, explains Zelensky, was presented to France and Great Britain as well as Italy. On Friday 11 October the president will fly to Germany and illustrate the plan to Chancellor Olaf Scholz: ”It is very important that all partners are together for a just peace”.
